#61 Alex Bertulis-Fernandes

Alex is a writer, artist and glutton for punishment. She considers herself a multidisciplinary creative, preferring not to restrict her imposter syndrome to just one field.

Last year she completed New Blood Shift, D&AD’s scheme for non-graduates. This was followed by placements at Iris and BBC Creative. She was selected to feature at Cream, The Talent Business’ global showcase of young creatives.

Alex was studying for a Foundation Diploma in Art & Design when her teacher asked her to ‘dial down the feminism’. The work she produced in response went viral and was featured in Newsweek, TIME Magazine, The Guardian and Dazed. Some people (men) tried to explain the piece to her. This led her to create yet more feminist art for The Sunday Times Style.

Alex is now one of nine writers working alongside an Editor as part of Penguin Books’ WriteNow mentoring scheme. She’s writing a book about what it’s like to be a woman in your twenties with mental health issues. Spoiler alert: it’s difficult.

Alex recently started doing stand-up comedy. She hopes to turn her book into a show that will be described as 'powerful' by The Guardian.
