We are, Etty Flynn, Hannah Kelly, Brie Gobel and Likando Kumoyo, four MA Graphic Communication Design students at Central Saint Martins. On top of our studies we've founded Fail Better, in partnership with Creative Conscience, that runs a monthly symposium on the topic of failure. We were motivated by the lack of discussion about failure in the industry, our own struggles coping with failure, and the belief that there’s value to be found in disastrous work. There’s no greater hindrance to the creative process than a crippling fear of failure, so we’re crushing our trepidation (and hopefully others’) with a series of hilarious anecdotes, a touch of schadenfreude, and lots of laughter. In an effort to de-stigmatise 'failure', we want to honour glorious design botches for the invaluable lessons that they teach us. It's daring to take risks in design, and talking about them when it all goes pear-shaped is even more daring. Our symposium gives voice to four intrepid speakers; students, tutors and industry professionals to speak candidly of their worst ever creative work and, more importantly, what they've learned from it. So next time you’re debating on making that next gutsy move—what is the worst that could happen? You could end up being one of our speakers.
“It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all, in which case you have failed by default.” - J. K. Rowling
